Happy 2019! My first blog of the new year! This week I decided to read "Getting Things Done" by David Allen as the year is coming to a close I felt like this perfect to read. It was great reminder since this new year is coming, and this book is bursting with positive energy and good vibes that I would love to bring with me into the new year. Because this will be the year I finally graduate with my Bachelor's degree in Marketing with a minor in Communications, its just been such a long journey. And I know this new year will be filled with new adventures whether it's regarding my life, career and especially this very blog. I will be discussing Multitasking Is A Bad Idea, Is Stress-Free Productivity Possible, Five Simple Steps That Apply Order To Chaos. And be sure to read my last blog on "Born To Win" by Zig Ziglar & FREE Download: January Desktop Wallpapers.
Multitasking Is A Bad Idea
The greatest lie we tell ourselves is that we can complete multiple things at a time when in reality individual tasks are completed quicker. One study found that just 2.5% of people are able to multitask effectively. By doing multiple things at a time we are compromising the chance of actually completing the task. And by dancing between the various tasks you are really dividing our attention when we should really be focusing. Besides, we now have so many distractions that are in our lives but also beaming from the screens on our devices. So even if we really could multitask it would be incredibly hard to do even the simplest task. Even though I am currently writing this blog and rewatching season 5 of Game of Thrones be for the final season, but no one is perfect.
Living Productively Stress-Free
David Allen's approach to Getting Things Done is helpful professionally and also personally. It's so effective that it has even been adopted by several Fortune 500 companies and by many others around the world. Although our mind is powerful for thoughts it's not the best place to keep up with them, in fact when we try to keep up too many we overload ourselves and increase our stress levels & forget important information. That is why we should collect all of our ideas and thoughts into a trusted system and review it regularly. David Allen said in his book that “you never have to have the same thought twice, unless you like the thought”.
By doing this you will become more focused and less stressed and to make decisions faster.
Stress The Silent Killer
One of the most shocking things I discovered while reading this book was just how strongly stress affects our overall health. Constant stress throughout the day it can really affect your health in serious ways and put you at risk to serious health issues. Like Increased Depression, Risk of Heart Attack, High Blood Sugar, High Blood Pressure, Fertility Problems, Low Sex Drive, Weakened Immune System, Insomnia, Erectile Dysfunction, Missed Period. And so all of this scared me into listening to David Allen's advice because I don't want to die from the stressful or unimportant issues in my life.
Five Simple Steps That Apply Order To Chaos
This can be completed by using a notepad, in-basket, voice recorder, Evernote to fully gather information that has your attention, Whatever it may be.
With everything, you gather start to ask yourself this: Is it actionable? If it is not then get rid of it or file it away so you can refer to it later. If it is actionable then you should take further action needed. If that action may take less than 3 minutes to completes then do it immediately. If not you can always delegate that task or create a list of task for later.
Create reminders for your actions and make a master list with deadlines. For example, separate your lists with categories so it won’t look so scattered, create sections like emails to send, errands to run, calls to make.
4. Reflect: Review Frequently Now that you have your lists it is important to review it weekly so that it will stay on your mind, and you’ll know what to complete next. By going over it weekly you can update the list accordingly and you will also notice that your list will shrink because you’ll be so used to this process.
The more you use this system your confidence will grow as check things off, now go get things done!
Would I Buy Or Read Again? I would love to read this book again, I feel like I need my own copy for the times that I need a refresher. Especially since this book is Zig Ziglar's last books since he passed away, so it was almost like he didn't leave anything unsaid and didn't hold back with the advice he gave. And this something that I will always appreciate about this book because I feel like got exclusive advice that no one else did since they didn't read the book. Which is why I have to recommend that you read this book, so you can start 2019 off the right way.
