This weeks book is by an author who needs no introduction, but if you are someone who has lived under a rock for many years and never heard of shows like Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal or even How to get away with Murder. Its Shonda season or should I say #TGIT giving us a reason to look forward to Thursday after having a rough week. Shonda Rhimes a woman that is powerfully unique in whatever she creates. I myself am a major fan of Shonda for multiple reasons as a black person trying to make a way on a creative platform and as a woman finding a balance between love and career. What Is Uncovered While Reading
In the book Year of Yes the world gets to meet Shonda and see what makes her well Shonda, we see her being one of few black students at Dartmouth College, finding a balance between motherhood and career, battles with weight, and not getting lost in the person you love. We get to see he tackle these issue on camera through her characters like Cristina Yang; a heart surgeon who decided to choose her career over a family because she knew that battled is much harder for a woman than a man.
How The Journey Began
Her year-long journey started during Thanksgiving dinner when her sister mumbled under her breath about how Shonda never says Yes to anything. And soon this began the challenge that changed her life forever of her no longer saying no to interviews, or commencement speeches but instead stepping into her fear and owning it.
Riding The Shondaland Roller Coaster
What I loved most about this memoir was her honesty of who she is and who she wanted to become. I see myself in her and the characters she creates, I also think that her characters in her shows are so powerful because they each share a piece of who she is. Her passion for storytelling and creating is groundbreaking and I don’t see an end in sight on this roller coaster at Shondaland for a talent like hers.
Be sure to catch the 15th Season of Grey's Anatomy on ABC this Thursday & Shondaland.com for more TGIT!
