This week I decided to read the book Jump by Steve Harvey; because the closer that I get to graduation I’m trying to figure out if I should just play it safe by settling with a job in state or build my career by going out of state. I found comfort in his story and from learning more about him I feel like I have to do the same and trust the process.
The Man Behind the Mustache
From reading this book I was allowed to actually get to see exactly who he is, he faced a lot a backlash from his family since he decided to go all in on his dream. He spoke about the strain on his marriage and how he found the new love of his life. Steve Harvey came off as honest by showing us all who he is and his journey to fame. His adventures of being homeless and starving by living out of his car, it was humbling for me to see what he gave up to pursue his dream.
No Room for jokes
Although Steve Harvey has made a name for himself by telling jokes, I was unable to find any inside of this book. What I loved most about this book was the fact that Steve didn’t position this as a cheap joke or comedy story of his life. It was clear to see that this book was written for him to introduce the man behind the jokes.
Filled with Faith
Using all the money he had to drive his way to different comedy clubs across America, this kind of determination to not give up completely inspired me to never give up on my dreams. From this book, we get to see Steve Harvey speaks openly about how when he had nothing his faith grew more in God. In school as a kid, Steve was asked what he wanted to do when he grew up and said 'Be on TV'. So his teacher decided to mock his dream and let the class chime in on what seemed to be unbelievable for them. Steve returned waiting to soon be punished for his behavior at school but instead was encouraged by his father. When Steve revealed that this was his actual dream and his father said that people try to limit your dreams if they can’t understand it. You can hear the full story on the Oprah Master Class podcast released on 8/22/18.
